Alzheimer’s Disease is estimated to affect 270,000 people and their, at least, 1 million relatives and carers in Australia. By 2020, Alzheimer’s Disease will affect almost 300,000 Australians.
The Australasian Consortium of Centres for Clinical Cognitive Research (AC4R) is the peak body representing Dementia Research Centres in Australasia. The AC4R is an effective network of sites with experience in phase i, II, III and IV clinical studies and provides a professional interface between pharmaceutical industry and clinical investigators involved in cognitive research in particular in Alzheimr's Disease.
We have an Annual Scientific Meeting with Scientists, Doctors and Pharma to allow update cooperation in this crucial area of Pharmaceutical Research
In 1994 a number of leading clinicians with a common research interest in the dementias met at the Australian Society of Geriatric Medicine meeting in Canberra, setting in motion what was to become AC4R. David Ames, Henry Brodaty, and Leon Flicker played important roles in the bringing together of a group of clinical researchers to share information and provide a professional interface with the pharmaceutical industry.
The creation of AC4R coincided with a series of significant changes in the care of patients with dementia, for example, the establishment of specialised memory clinics, improved methods for assessing people with dementia and the development of a screening methodology. We have a special interest in MCI and Prodromal AD.
Review of Drug Study protocols
Study protocols may be submitted to the AC4R Executive Committee for confidential review and comment. The Committee facilitates interaction between study sponsors and AC4R members by inviting expressions of interest once a study proposal is approved by the AC4R committee. Advice is also provided on both study design and feasibility and the site selection process enhanced. The AC4R prepares a budget for studies on behalf of the Australasian sites, streamlining the negotiation process. Clinical Trial Agreements are, however, signed between sponsors and individual sites. An administrative fee covers this entire procedure. For further details please contact

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology companies may become corporate members of the AC4R. These Industrial partners provide financial support to the consortium but do not receive commercially-sensitive study communications or attend AGM.
Annual Scientific meeting is open to all and to Pharma sponsorship.
If you wish to apply for AC4R membership please contact Karyn Boundy or Michael Woodward
